• Congratulations! to Teal Stanley from Greensboro, NC as the winner of the 2016 Southern Open.
• Congratulations! to IM John Webster from Stoneville, NC as second place winner, and IM Larry Keen from Halls, TN as the third place winner of the 2016 Southern Open.
• Congratulations! to Ken Christian from Watertown, TN as first place Majors winner, and Paul Hines of Olmstead, KY as the second place Majors winner of the 2016 Southern Open.
• Frank Davis President of Southern States Checker Association opened the business meeting at 10:00am Friday morning with prayer by Ken Christian, our SSCA Vice-President. Frank welcomed 15 players, 8 Masters and 7 Majors players.
• Under electing new officers, Larry Keen replaces Ken Christian, with Frank Davis, President and Mary Davis as Secretary & Treasurer of Southern States Checker Association (SSCA). This was a motion by Larry Keen and seconded by John Webster, and motion carried by majority.
• In the business meeting it was discussed with 15 players, (as Frank elected not to play which left 7 Masters and 7 Majors) how we should play.  John Webster made a motion to play a two day round robin which was seconded by Mike Choate and carried.  This allowed a bye round for each class and playing 3 rounds Friday and 4 rounds Saturday.  This also made a two day instead of our usual three day tournament.  We were saving a day of hotel expense so the hotel charged us 1/2 price for the Saturday conference room rental since we weren't staying Saturday.
• Frank Davis recognized and honored JR Smith for his service to checkers and keeping a website on tournament dates & results.  Davis presented Smith a nice plaque.
• Frank covered the playing rules, tournament agenda, and schedule. Things such as: 7 rounds as 2.5 hours of tournament play with 3 rounds Friday, 4 rounds Saturday to be played as posted on the on the schedule displayed on the bulletin board with starting and finishing times. Our standard playing rules were briefly covered as following: Lateness for play would be penalized by forfeiting a game if over 15 minutes late and if a hour late it would be ruled as a forfeit for both games or a round forfeit. The bye would be 3 points, the standard 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and zero points for a loss will be counted as game points. You must stay on schedule as for time limits allowed for the games and rounds as 1 1/4 hours per game making a 2 1/2 hour round.
• Players have this option: after 1st hour on their first game players may consider recording the position of their unfinished game and start their 2nd game, after completing it, return to their unfinished game. If players didn't want to do this, then Frank Davis, referee's rules would apply.
• Frank Davis said a time limit of 1 minute per move for 10 minutes would be applied to conclude overtime games, if that didn't determine the results then he would make a judgment call to terminate the overtime game in order to stay on schedule. He also has the option to solicit the aid of another Master to help judge the results. On Master overtime games a computer program (KingRow analysis) may be requested, and could be used if both Master players agreed, and at least a 60+ point score is needed to declare a win.
• Frank Davis reported on the W.C. Green Trust Fund saying this year we had $70.00 applied toward the Southern prize fund which Morgantown Bank & Trust of Morgantown, Kentucky sent to Frank Davis, President of the Southern States Checker Association.
• Ken Christian explained why this year there was no door prizes, because of circumstances prevented it.
• Davis also announced the 2017 Tennessee State Open will be held March 3rd - 5th, 2017 and the Southern will be held July 7th - 9th, 2017 in Lebanon, TN with a king or double queen room rental at $87 per night which includes our playing room, coffee, and a nice hot continental breakfast.
• It was also announced that the ACF 3-Move National was just 2½ weeks away, Wednesday through Sunday, July 27th through July 30th with a $18,000+ prize fund and at least 50 players already booked their hotel rooms at Honeysuckle Inn and Willow Tree Inn just across the street.
• "T" separates player's opponent from player's accumulated game points.  Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4.
• We appreciated the donations and contributions to the Southern this year as: Joe McDaniel $300, Frank & Mary Davis $210, Larry Keen $100 which help make up the total cash prize fund of $785.00.  Entry fee for Masters was $25 and Majors division was $20.
• Frank and Mary, our referee and scorekeeper did a fantastic job as usual.
• John Gibson always shares some of him many checker collectables, pictures, & memorabilia with tournament players.  This year he displayed three paintings and a John Deere tractor checker set.
• A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended.
